Independence man charged with murder in fatal shooting of his girlfriend

An Independence man has been charged in the shooting death of his girlfriend, who was killed Tuesday in their apartment, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office announced in a news release.

Deon D. Sanders, 25, is charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action after allegedly telling police Tuesday that he shot Camry A. Alonzo.

According to charging documents, Sanders showed up at the Kansas City Police Department’s East Patrol Division Station on Tuesday, placed a gun outside the building and told police officers he had shot his girlfriend at their Independence apartment. He gave officers the address of the home.

Independence police officers located the apartment at 728 North Jennings Road and went inside to check for survivors. A woman, who had been shot, was found dead in a bathroom. She was identified as Alonzo, 22.

A nearby resident told police that gunshots were heard abut 6 a.m. Tuesday.

During an interview with police, Sanders allegedly said he shot Alonzo after arriving home from a night out with a friend and two other women, court records stated. He stated he and Alonzo had been involved in an argument beforehand over who he was going out with.

When he arrived home early Tuesday morning, Sanders found the front door open, he said, and the bathroom door locked. He stated he called for Alonzo but no one answered. He told police he was scared because he didn’t know who was in the bathroom.

Sanders then stated he fired shots into the door, according to court records. Two bullet holes were later located by police.

Sanders said he forced his way into the bathroom and found Alonzo, who had been struck by the gunfire. He said he then left the apartment, taking their 6-month-old child with him to another residence, and then turned himself in to Kansas City police. He told police he didn’t intend to shoot the victim.

Text messages reviewed by police showed that the last message the victim sent to Sanders stated at 5:40 a.m., “You can sit here and call other (expletive) people but can’t answer me.” According to court records, the victim also sent a text at 6:03 a.m. to another family member that stated, “I need help please!!!!”

Prosecutors filed charges against Sanders on Wednesday. He remains in the Jackson County jail. Bond has been set at $250,000.

An attorney has not yet been listed for Sanders.
