Car fleeing police in Kansas City crashes, leaving driver dead

The driver of a car police were trying to stop died Monday afternoon after crashing at Ninth Street and Bales Avenue in Kansas City, according to police.

Just before 5:40 p.m. police officers were trying to conduct a vehicle check in the area of Ninth Street and Brighton Avenue in regard to an ongoing investigation into an aggravated assault, police said in a statement.

The vehicle didn’t stop, police said. Officers tried to pursue the car, but it lost control, striking a concrete wall, a pole, and a parked vehicle less than a mile away at Ninth Street and Bales Avenue.

The driver died at the scene. He was identified by police as Daniel Ruiz-Serafin, 17.

The police department’s accident investigation unit was processing the scene. The investigation continued.
