Clay County sheriff’s deputy fired amid investigation into sexual assault allegation

A Clay County sheriff’s deputy has been fired amid an investigation into an alleged sexual assault of a jail inmate, the sheriff’s office announced.

The deputy, whose name has been withheld, was placed on administrative leave after being accused last month of sexually assaulting the inmate inside the county jail. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said it “terminated the employment of the Probationary Deputy Sheriff” on Wednesday. No further information was released.

An investigation was launched after the inmate made the allegation and identified the deputy on April 25.

Family members of the inmate told The Star they were concerned about his physical well-being and have retained an attorney.

The family of the inmate identified him in a call with The Star. The Star does not generally identify victims of sexual assault without their permission.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said in the same Twitter post announcing the firing Wednesday. No arrests have been announced and no charges have been filed.
