Two KC brothers charged with murder after 2016 shooting near Plaza Library

Two brothers from Kansas City have been charged in connection with a shooting that left one person dead in a parking garage at the Plaza Library in 2016.

The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Marquis D. Henderson, 23, and Travon Cross, 28, each with second-degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Ahkeem Hobby three years ago.

The shooting happened on Dec. 29, 2016 in a parking garage next to the Plaza Library at 4801 Main St.

At the scene, Kansas City police found Hobby, who had been shot twice in the head.

According to charging documents, surveillance video showed a Toyota Camry that police determined to be linked to the shooting. The car, found at Cross’s home, had been rented from Enterprise by Cross, police said. After obtaining a search warrant, police found in the car a .32 caliber Iver Johnson five-shot revolver. The revolver had what looked to be blood on it.

A review of the victim’s Facebook page showed photos of him captured on the day of the homicide with a semi-automatic handgun and a revolver that appeared to match the revolver found in Cross’s car.

Police received information from an anonymous tipster that Henderson was also involved in the shooting.

A man seen on the surveillance footage directing the victim’s vehicle into the parking garage appeared to look like Henderson.

In a 2018 interview with police, Henderson said he shot the victim after he and his brother, Cross, had agreed to meet at the parking garage to sell marijuana. During the transaction, which took place inside the rental car, Henderson said, Hobby allegedly tried to rob Cross at gunpoint, and Henderson shot Hobby, according to court records.

During a separate interview, Cross told police, “I know my part in it and I didn’t do anything,” according to court records. He requested an attorney.

Prosecutors say they filed murder charges against both men last month. The charging documents were unsealed recently after the two men were taken into custody.

Henderson and Cross remain in the Jackson County jail with bond set at $150,000 each, according to the prosecutor’s office. Attorneys representing the brothers could not immediately be reached for comment Monday evening.
