Victim of Tuesday night shooting reported to be a child, Kansas City police say

Kansas City police were investigating after a victim reported to be a child was struck by gunfire in a vehicle Tuesday night.

The shooting was reported around 7:30 p.m. in the area of Truman Road and Winchester Avenue in Kansas City.

According to Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a Kansas City police spokesman, a police officer working off duty in the area reported seeing someone firing shots out of a moving vehicle toward another vehicle on Truman Road.

The off-duty officer contacted dispatch for additional police officers, who located what appeared to be a crime scene on Truman Road.

Around the same time, police also received a 911 call from a person inside one of the vehicles who said someone had been shot.

Shortly after, a shooting victim was located almost three miles away in Independence. Police officers from Independence found in the 1300 block of Ash Avenue a vehicle with an injured person inside.

The victim is thought to be a child under the age of 10, Becchina said.

The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The investigation was ongoing Tuesday night.

No other injuries have been reported and no arrests have been announced.
