Bank robbery suspects lead police on 110 mph chase across south Kansas City metro

Two bank robbery suspects were arrested Wednesday after leading police on a high-speed chase across the southern part of the Kansas City metro area that ended in a foot pursuit in Overland Park.

The two people in custody are suspected of robbing the First Federal Bank Wednesday morning at 3500 S. Noland Road in Independence. Two robbers fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of money, said FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton in an email.

Police spotted the suspects’ vehicle, a black SUV, and chased it along Interstate 435 across south Kansas City.

At one point, the fleeing SUV reached 100 mph as it drove on the shoulder along I-435 near 103rd Street, according to radio traffic. The SUV maintained 100 mph as it headed into Kansas.

The pursuing officer reported that the vehicle drove all over the road during the chase.

The SUV tried fleeing west along Kansas 10, where it reached speeds of about 110 mph before exiting on Renner Road and returning back east on I-435.

The SUV then headed north on U.S. 69 where it exited onto 95th Street. The suspects were reported to have abandoned the SUV as it came to a crawling stop at a 7-Eleven near 95th and Antioch Road.

The suspects then fled into the surrounding neighborhood, running through back yards and leaping fences, according to radio traffic.

Lucien Endecott, who works at Scooter’s Coffee at 95th & Antioch, said police swarmed the area from all directions.

“This is normally a quiet area so it was exciting to watch,” Endecott said.

Overland Park police arrested the two suspects near the 9400 block of Woodward Street. Police also searched the area for a bag, which they found a short time later.
