Police shoot, wound person armed with rifle at Independence golf course

Independence police shot and wounded an armed person Monday during what they described as an exchange of gunfire at the Rockwood golf course, according to the police department.

Officers were called after 11:30 a.m. to the area of the Clifford H. Nowlin Middle School, at 2800 South Hardy Avenue, on reports of a suicidal person, according to the Independence Police Department.

Both the middle school and the nearby Korte Elementary School were placed on lockdown.

Shortly before noon, officers found the person in a vehicle, armed with a rifle, near South Hardy Avenue.

The person allegedly fled onto the nearby Rockwood golf course, where “gunfire was exchanged,” police said in a statement.

The person was wounded and was taken to a hospital. A police spokeswoman did not know his age or condition.

No officers were injured.

Both schools were released from lockdown.
