Kansas City police investigate homicide near car wash on Prospect Avenue

Police investigated a homicide Tuesday after a man was found fatally shot at a car wash on Prospect Avenue in Kansas City.

The shooting was reported about 11 a.m. near 44th Street and Prospect, where a woman called police and said a man who had been shot arrived in a vehicle, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

The man was declared dead at the scene. He was later identified as Lavance Ellis, 48.

Police said it appeared the shooting occurred near the car wash.

During the investigation, police received information that a house in the 4200 block of Prospect may have been involved in the incident, said Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a police spokesman. Police were interviewing residents at the house.

Detectives were interviewing people and searching for witnesses. Crime scene investigators were processing evidence.

Police asked anyone with information to call homicide detectives at 816-234-4633 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

Police initially thought a separate shooting reported along 44th Street around the same time might have been connected to the homicide, but the incidents proved to unrelated, Becchina said.

Just before the call at the car wash, police had received reports of shooting at 44th Street and Park Avenue. A shooting victim who said he was hurt in that incident was found at 44th and South Benton.

That victim’s injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, police said.
