Man stole gun from Liberty sporting goods store and fled, police say
A man stole a firearm from a sporting goods store in Liberty and fled with it Thursday, according to police.
Store employees at Academy Sports + Outdoors at 269 South Stewart Road called police about 11 a.m. to report the incident. Officers cleared the store and did not find the suspect, according to Capt. Matt Kellogg of the Liberty Police Department.
The suspect was not in custody as of noon. Police have identified him but are not releasing his name. It remained unclear what kind of weapon he allegedly stole or if it was loaded.
Police are investigating the incident as an armed robbery, Kellogg said. Employees scattered out of the store as officers responded to the scene, he said.
No one was injured and no shots were fired, police said. The city noted in a post on Twitter that the incident was “not an active shooter situation.”
Officials asked people to avoid the area while police investigated.
