Lee’s Summit man pleads guilty to illegally buying firearms, making false statement

A Lee’s Summit man pleaded guilty to illegally possessing firearms after a series of altercations including a shooting last year.

Jay C. Miller, 28, pleaded guilty in federal court to illegally purchasing firearms and making a false written statement on a federal form.

Miller admitted to illegally purchasing or attempting to purchase more than 15 firearms and falsely claiming he wasn’t using a controlled substance in order to purchase a gun from a pawn shop, according to the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri.

On Oct. 15, 2016, Miller was arrested after a disturbance at the Independence Mall. Four guns were located in Miller’s vehicle.

A rifle with a 30-round magazine was located at Miller’s residence in August 2017 after officers responded to a shots fired call. The U.S. attorney’s office said Miller later admitted to shooting at an individual.

On May 16, 2018, Lee’s Summit police responded to Miller’s residence where a person had been shot in the chest during an argument. A pistol and a rifle were found under a porch.

Miller faces up to 20 years in federal prison without parole when he is sentenced.
