Kansas City police shot a man Thursday morning near 11th Street and Oakley Avenue after he pointed a gun at them, police said.

Someone had called police to the area about 10 a.m. to check on a suspicious person with a gun.

The man, described as about 40 years old, was on a bicycle pulling a wagon or trailer filled with scrap metal. A witness had noticed a firearm in the man’s waistband, said Capt. James Schulte.

When officers arrived, the man began to run. As officers chased him between two houses, the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at officers, who then shot him, Schulte said.

Police did not say how many shots officers fired, how many times bullets hit the gunman or whether his gun was loaded.

He was taken to a hospital. Police did not have details on his condition other than to say he was stable.
