Downtown Kansas City streets shut down after suspicious package found

Kansas City Police Department shut down Ninth Street between Main and Wyandotte streets Friday to investigate a “suspicious package.”

The Department’s bomb and arson units were dispatched to the area just after 11 a.m. according to Kansas City Police.

Kate and Rob Joseph, owners of Banksia on Ninth Street, say they believed the package was in the bushes behind their restaurant. They were rather unhappy that the incident, due to the fact that the restaurant closed down during the lunch rush, and the food in the oven was ruined.

“I’ve heard people say our food is the bomb, but this is taking it too far,” said Rob Joseph, showing humor in spite of the event.

Police said it is unknown what was in the package. The package was destroyed in a controlled detonation.

At about 1:30 p.m., the all clear was given.
