Man is charged with assaulting an off-duty Kansas City police officer at her home

A 28-year-old man was charged Thursday with assaulting an off-duty police officer outside her home before she shot him in the leg.

Jon N. Garcia remained in the hospital Thursday night. The officer also suffered a gunshot wound to her hand and underwent surgery. It was unknown if she was also hospitalized.

The incident began just before 5 a.m. Thursday when a man started pounding on the door of the officer’s home in Kansas City, North.

The officer’s daughter told police that she woke to the sound of someone banging on the door and she saw her mother bracing herself against the door and repeatedly saying, “I’m a cop.”

The officer then stepped outside with her gun and told the man not to move.

Instead, he rushed her, grabbing her by the arm and throwing her down a flight of stairs, according to court documents filed late Thursday afternoon in Clay County Circuit Court.

He then began choking her. The officer called to her daughter for help, and the girl said she punched the man in the head and pulled his arm away. The officer then fired two shots, striking the man in the lower left leg and also wounding her own hand.

When patrol officers arrived, they found the officer standing over Garcia as he lay face down on the ground.

According to court documents, Garcia asked arresting officers what happened and where they had found him. He told them he had been shot at Rockfest, the music festival held last weekend in Kansas City.

Clay County prosecutors charged him with one count of first-degree assault. Bond was set at $100,000.
