Man is killed, woman injured in shooting near I-435 and 63rd Street in Kansas City

A man was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting Monday near Interstate 435 and 63rd Street.

The shooting was reported shortly after 1 p.m. at James A. Reed Road and 63rd. Officers on the way to the scene found the victims in a vehicle that had pulled off to the side of 63rd Street, according to Capt. Tim Hernandez, a Kansas City Police Department spokesman.

The man injured in the shooting died and the woman was in critical condition, Hernandez said. Both victims were in their 40s, he said.

The man who died was identified by police on Tuesday as 40-year-old Michael A. Garrett.

Garrett and the woman were in the same car but police said they did not know their relationship to each other.

Police closed 63rd Street from I-435 to Missouri 350 highway as the investigation continued.

Investigators did not have a description of a suspect and were still trying to find the location where the shooting took place.

“We are still trying to establish exactly what happened,” Hernandez said. “It possibly could have been a rolling gun battle-type situation.”

Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
