Teen girl shot to death in Kansas City, Kan.
A girl reported missing from the Kansas foster care system in 2012 was killed Saturday morning in a shootout in Kansas City, Kan.
Police said Monday that 16-year-old Jamie J. Hernandez-Zubia was shot about 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the 2500 block of Ridge Avenue.
Police called to the area found her dead in the street. According to witnesses, the occupants of two vehicles had fired shots at each other. Hernandez-Zubia had been a passenger in one of the vehicles, according to police.
She had been listed as missing since running away June 9, 2012, from a foster care placement in Wathena, in far northeastern Kansas.
Wathena Police Chief Jason Pendleton said Monday that the missing-person case was still active at the time of Hernandez-Zubia’s death. Pendleton said police had received reports that she may be in the Kansas City area but had not been able to confirm that.
According to Wyandotte County court records, Hernandez-Zubia was prosecuted in juvenile court on a drug possession case in 2012. Pendleton said his department never received notification of that case.
According to the court records, she failed to appear for sentencing in the drug case. A warrant for her arrest had been active since August 2012.
Police said Monday they were searching for a white pickup truck that may have a bullet hole in its tailgate in connection with the killing. The truck is believed to be a late-1990s or early-2000s Ford F-150 with flare sides, tinted windows, 20-inch chrome rims and a “touch screen” device in the cab.
