Prison ordered in crash that killed 8-year-old in Kansas City, Kan.
A Kansas City, Kan., man was sentenced Friday to more than 20 years in prison for killing an 8-year-old girl while he was fleeing from police.
A Wyandotte County judge sentenced Tyrone Murphy Jr. to 20 years and 11 months in the April 2014 death of Jasmine Rodriguez, who was on her way home from church after making her first confession.
The wreck occurred at 63rd Street and Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, Kan., after a police officer tried to stop Murphy for a traffic violation.
Murphy ran a red light and his vehicle struck a van in which Jasmine was a passenger. Jasmine’s mother, who was driving, and two other children were also injured in the crash.
Lab tests showed that Murphy, 28, had marijuana, alcohol and cocaine in his system at the time of the crash.
He pleaded no contest in February to charges of second-degree murder and aggravated battery.
