Homeless man who robbed midtown KC bank to pay for motel room gets federal prison

A man who robbed a midtown Kansas City bank last year was sentenced Monday to six years and six months in federal prison.

Terrance R. Haynes told investigators that he committed the robbery because he was homeless and wanted money to pay for a motel room.

Haynes, 57, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in April to a charge of bank robbery for the October 2017 holdup of the U.S. Bank branch at Main Street and Armour Boulevard.

He got away with about $1,600 but was arrested a short time later in downtown Kansas City, according to his plea agreement.

The teller who was robbed told investigators that Haynes lifted his shirt during the robbery to show a gun tucked into his waistband.

Haynes denied using a gun, and none was found by investigators.
