After fatal shooting in Independence, police search for ‘armed and dangerous’ man

Detectives investigating a homicide early Sunday in Independence are searching for 27-year-old Michael Dumas of Pleasant Hill, identified by police as a person of interest in the fatal shooting.

Dumas should be considered armed and dangerous, police said. The Independence Police Department released photos of Dumas and described him as being about 6 feet tall, weighing 175 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Police asked for the public’s help finding Dumas several hours after a double shooting at a home in Independence left one person dead.

The shooting occurred shortly after 5:30 a.m. at a house in the 3800 block of South Sterling Avenue, according to police.

One person had minor injuries and refused medical treatment. The second person was taken to a hospital and later died.

Anyone with information about Dumas’ whereabouts is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477, Independence police at 816-836-3600 or 816-325-7330.
