$500,000 worth of jewelry stolen from Johnson County home. Housekeeper pleads guilty.

A former housekeeper pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in jewelry from her Johnson County employer.

Sabina Garcia-Rivera, 43, of Olathe, pleaded guilty in Johnson County District Court to one count of felony theft and three counts of making a false writing.

She was charged in January with stealing more than $500,000 in jewelry while working for a woman who lived in the Stilwell community in southern Johnson County.

The thefts occurred over a period of two years before they were discovered in late 2017.

The false writing charges involve false statements Garcia-Rivera made to pawn shop employees when pawning jewelry pieces.

Garcia-Rivera pawned numerous pieces of jewelry for a fraction of what they were worth, prosecutors said.

As part of her plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed six additional false writing charges.

Under terms of the agreement, prosecutors will request a prison sentence of three years and two months. The defense will ask for a two-year sentence. She will also be required to make restitution.

Sentencing for Garcia-Rivera is scheduled for Jan. 11.
