Two arrested after stolen pickup slams into sheriff’s vehicle, injuring deputy

A Leavenworth County Sheriff’s deputy was injured Sunday evening after a fleeing motorist rammed a stolen pickup truck into the deputy’s patrol car.

A 42-year-old man and his male passenger were arrested after their pickup crashed into the basement of house.

The incident began just after 7 p.m. around U.S. 73 near Salt Creek when the deputy tried to pull over a pickup truck during a traffic stop.

The driver pulled over. But after the deputy got out of his patrol car, the driver allegedly backed into the patrol car and sped away, according to the Leavenworth Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy chased the pickup in his damaged patrol car, authorities said.

When the chase continued northbound on County Road 33, the fleeing driver allegedly braked and put the pickup in reverse and slammed it again into the patrol vehicle a second time, disabling it.

The deputy injured his knee in the collision.

The pickup continued speeding northbound. Additional deputies and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper responded to the chase, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities later found the pickup had crashed into the basement of a house near U.S. 73 and Kansas 192. The fleeing driver and a male passenger were arrested a short time later. The pickup was reported stolen from Oregon.

The driver, who has not been identified, is being held on multiple felony charges including assault on a law enforcement officer, burglary, property damage and being in possession of stolen property.
