For 2017 road rage killing of Kansas City mother, man gets five years in prison

A 22-year-old Kansas City man was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison for a 2017 road rage incident that left a woman dead and her small child injured.

Juan L. Sanchez was sentenced in Jackson County Circuit Court, where he pleaded guilty in August to involuntary manslaughter in the death of Shaymaa Saudi.

Saudi, 35, was killed, and her 4-year-old daughter was injured in a January 15, 2017, traffic crash at the intersection of St. John and Askew avenues in Kansas City.

According to court documents, the incident was preceded by an altercation between Sanchez and Saudi’s husband.

Sanchez was driving a truck and pursued the Dodge Charger that Saudi was driving with her daughter in the back seat.

Sanchez’s truck bumped into the Charger, causing Saudi to lose control. The car left the road and crashed into a utility pole.

Sanchez left the scene. He parked the truck at a relative’s house, removed the license plate and covered the truck with a tarp.

As a result of those actions, he was also convicted of tampering with evidence. He received a four-year sentence for that charge. It was ordered to run concurrently with the manslaughter sentence.
