Teenager charged in Plaza shooting hid handgun used in attack, prosecutors say
Jackson County prosecutors have filed a charge against an 18-year-old teenager accused of hiding a handgun used in a shooting Tuesday afternoon on the Country Club Plaza.
Quinton Shelby of Kansas City faces a charge of evidence tampering in the incident, which happened about noon near the corner of 47th and Central streets.
Shelby is being held on $35,000 bond. No court appearance has yet been scheduled.
According to court records, Shelby allegedly told investigators that he was walking with a group of friends when one of them fired several shots at two men.
The group ran, and the shooter allegedly handed the handgun to Shelby, who hid the weapon under some mulch in a nearby alley. Shelby then ran and hid in a nearby parking garage but was later arrested.
Detectives later recovered the handgun and several rounds of ammunition that matched evidence recovered from the crime scene. The gun was reported stolen in Lee’s Summit, according to court records.
The shooting caused police to shut down portions of the shopping district as heavily-armed officers searched for the shooter.
Most of the district remained open during the search and investigation. The Shake Shack restaurant near where the shooting occurred was temporarily shut down while police investigated.
Police later said the shooting appeared to have stemmed from a dispute between two groups of men.
No one was reported injured in the incident.
