Gun found in car at Shawnee Mission North High School, OP police arrest student

A Shawnee Mission North High School student was arrested and charged Thursday after a gun was found in his car.

The student, Isaiah Gilmore, of Overland Park, was charged Thursday in the juvenile division of Johnson County District Court with possession of a firearm by a juvenile, possession of THC and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Gilmore’s attorney, Garrett Solomon, said he did not have a comment.

Overland Park police said an administrator received a tip at the end of the school day Wednesday and notified police. They said the handgun was found in the 17-year-old boy’s car.

The school’s principal notified parents in writing and said the incident didn’t involve any direct threats to students or staff.

“An administrator and school resource officer retrieved the weapon, and no one was injured,” Principal Jeremy Higgins said. “I can assure you that this incident will be handled in accordance with district policy, along with state and federal laws.”
