Man who aided in Shawnee robbery and killing is sentenced to prison

The getaway driver in the 2010 robbery and killing of a Shawnee liquor store owner was sentenced Friday to five years in prison.

Larry Marshall Jr. initially was charged with murder along with his cousin and co-defendant, Bruce Ashley Jr., in the death of 61-year-old Gerry Grovenburg.

But Marshall, 34, pleaded guilty to lesser charges of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and aiding a felon. He testified at Ashley’s trial last month.

A Johnson County jury found Ashley, 31, guilty of first-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery. His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 10.

Grovenburg, who owned Mr. G’s Liquor Store at 76th Street and Quivira Road for 35 years, was shot to death in a May 2010 robbery attempt.
