Search for murder suspect leads to federal charge against second man
A 19-year-old Kansas City man arrested Monday while sitting on a porch next to a murder suspect was charged Wednesday with illegally possessing an AK-47-style pistol.
Federal prosecutors allege that Darian D. Thomas could not legally possess the weapon because he is a convicted felon.
According to court documents, a task force of Kansas City police officers and FBI agents spotted 18-year-old Shyreif Carter walking with another man they did not know. Carter was being sought on a warrant charging him with second-degree murder in the April 9 shooting death of a 21-year-old man.
After Carter and the other man walked to the front porch of a house in the 3400 block of Park Avenue, the officers moved in and arrested them.
The semi-automatic pistol with an attached 30-round magazine was found tucked inside the front of Thomas’ pants, according to the court documents.
He is on probation for a second-degree robbery conviction, according to the documents. Thomas was also arrested in late March inside a house where five firearms, including two that had been reported stolen, were found by police. He was released pending further investigation.
