Suspect is in custody as Whiteman airman dies from gunshot injuries
A senior airman stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base died Sunday at a Kansas City hospital from wounds suffered during a shooting at a house away from the base early Saturday.
Authorities arrested a suspect but as of Sunday had made no announcement about charges.
In a news release issued Saturday, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect fired a handgun inside the home, striking a friend. A woman who answered the phone at the sheriff’s department Sunday evening was unable to offer any more information.
A spokesman for Whiteman could not be reached, either, but in a statement, Brig. Gen. Glen VanHerck, 509th Bomb Wing commander, said, “We have lost a valued member of Team Whiteman.”
Whiteman is east of Kansas City near Knob Noster, Mo.
