Man and woman accused of assaulting cop during arrest at Lenexa motel

A 25-year-old Overland Park man is accused of assaulting a Lenexa police officer, who was dragged momentarily by a car, during an arrest Friday evening.

Cortez A. Jwuan Carson faces aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia following the incident.

Police said in a news release that the officer was patrolling the parking lot of Motel 6 in the 9700 block of Lenexa Drive about 7 p.m. and attempted to arrest Carson for marijuana possession. Carson, police said, ignored the officer’s commands and ran, got inside a car and tried to back out of a parking stall. The officer reached inside the vehicle but was dragged a short distance while trying to stop Carson, police said.

The officer stopped the vehicle as he struggled with Carson. A 23-year-old woman who was with Carson, police said, jumped on the officer’s back.

Additional officers soon arrived and helped arrest Carson and the woman, who was identified as Mayla Cairo Mitchell of Kansas City.

Mitchell was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and with interference with a law enforcement officer.
