Shawnee man charged in Johnson County with child rape

A 32-year-old Shawnee man has been charged with sexually assaulting a child under the age of 14.

Benjamin Edward Ambrose Rutherford was charged Tuesday in Johnson County District Court with two counts of rape and one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

Rutherford was booked into the Johnson County Jail Wednesday morning. His bond is set at $250,000.

The victim of the alleged crimes was born in 2004, according to court documents.

According to the documents, the incidents occurred last September and October. The case was investigated by Overland Park police.

At Rutherford’s first court appearance Wednesday afternoon, he was not required to enter a plea. He requested a court-appointed lawyer and his next court appearance was scheduled for Feb. 15.
