Suspicious package near University Academy contains only books

Classes at a Kansas City school resumed Wednesday morning after the police department’s bomb squad determined that a suspicious package left nearby contained only books.

The bomb squad responded to University Academy shortly before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. The package had been found outside the charter school in the 6800 block of Holmes Road, said Superintendent Tony Kline.

“We had a box left in a weird spot, where our buses come onto campus,” Kline said. “It had a note that said ‘books for library’ but it was just a weird place for that box to be.”

As a precaution, school security staff called Kansas City police and set up a perimeter around the school, Kline said. The bomb squad robot examined the package and determined no threat existed, Kline said.
