‘Pretty haphazard, chaotic scene.’ Shots fired at police officers in east Kansas City

Police tactical teams mobilized with snipers stood by after police officers were fired upon near 53rd Street and Indiana Avenue late Monday afternoon. A suspect was taken into custody shortly after 5 p.m.

Described as a “pretty haphazard, chaotic scene,” by KCPD Media Unit Commander Lionel Colon, the incident began after officers were originally dispatched after being notified of shots fired in the area. Upon arrival, officers observed a man standing near a Dodge Ram pickup truck carrying a gun. After brief conversation, the suspect refused to drop his weapon and began exchanging gunfire with the officers before retreating into the truck.

At least one police officer and possibly two fired shots during the exchange, according to radio traffic.

After a brief period of non-compliance from the suspect, police called for an armored vehicle and contemplated firing on the vehicle’s tires. However shortly after 5 p.m. police reported that the suspect began complying, raising his hands in the air saying “Please don’t shoot.”

No injuries to the suspect or officers were reported.
