Homeless man charged with 2016 Independence homicide has been sentenced
A homeless man who was charged with killing a 55-year-old man in Independence on New Year’s Day in 2016 has been sentenced to 22 years in prison, the Jackson County prosecuting attorney’s office announced Friday.
Darryl M. Schaeffel, 26, pleaded guilty last November to charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. He was charged with killing Charles D. Younger. A Jackson County judge sentenced Schaeffel to prison on Friday.
Independence police found Younger’s body inside a home in the 15000 block of East Truman Road on New Year’s Day in 2016.
Police also found three spent shell casings nearby.
The victim had been shot and stabbed, according to a probable cause statement.
Witnesses had told police in 2016 that Schaeffel was living in Younger’s home for several days and that the two were arguing because Younger thought Schaeffel was stealing from him, court records said.
