KC man sentenced to federal prison for robbing Bank Midwest in 2016

U.S. District Judge Gary A. Fenner sentenced a 59-year-old Kansas City man to 14 years in federal prison without parole on Thursday for an armed bank robbery the defendant committed while he was on parole for a state murder conviction.

The defendant, Gregory Burgin, pleaded guilty last July to one count of armed bank robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, the U.S. attorney’s office said in a news release.

The robbery happened on March 12, 2016 at Bank Midwest in the 6400 block of Brookside Boulevard in Kansas City. Burgin and another man robbed the bank at gunpoint and took more than $8,000 before fleeing, the news release said.

Kansas City police found the suspect vehicle in Burgin’s driveway about half an hour after the robbery. Inside his residence, police found a Crown Royal bag that had $8,155 as well as two pistols in the home. They also found clothing items matching the description of what the bank robbers were wearing.

Burgin was on parole at the time of the robbery in 2016. He was found guilty of second-degree murder on Oct. 31, 1980 after fatally shooting a woman. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison and was released on parole in November 2004. Burgin’s parole was revoked in May 2007, but he was released again two years later.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alison D. Dunning. It was investigated by the Kansas City Police Department, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
