KC police patrol car’s rear window shot out; suspect charged
A 26-year-old man faces assault charges for allegedly shooting at a pair of Kansas City police officers while they were on patrol near Blue Parkway and Cleveland Avenue on Saturday.
Isaiah D. Jackson of Kansas City is charged with two counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon for the shooting.
The officers realized the back window of their patrol car had been shot out after hearing loud bursts of gunfire, prosecutors allege.
One of the officers thought he had been shot when he felt something hit the back of his head. He sustained a small cut to the back of his head.
He saw a maroon 1999 Mercedes SUV speed past them and continue eastbound on Blue Parkway. The officers followed the SUV until it pulled over two minutes later on Blue Parkway, and they arrested Jackson.
Officers recovered ammunition from the pocket of the jacket Jackson was wearing.
Video from the patrol car showed the SUV appeared to slow down momentarily as it drove past them, according to court records.
Detectives reviewed mounted cameras at the intersection that showed the SUV slow down to the same rate of speed as the police patrol car, brake and then speed away, prosecutors allege.
Jackson told investigators he was driving on Blue Parkway near Cleveland Avenue and he had fired a handgun into the air about five minutes before passing the marked patrol car.
