Police said there was a report of shots fired at 1:50 a.m. in the 1700 block of Northwest Sixth Street. The victim, identified as Colby Stephenson, was found dead in a front yard.

A witness reported seeing a late 1990s model Pontiac speeding away. The car was missing the rear driver’s side hubcap.

Stephenson was a student at Valley View High School, according to Katie Woolf, a spokeswoman for the Blue Springs School District.

Before the school day began, the district had arranged for additional support for students and staff at the high school, Woolf said.
