Jackson County woman sentenced to 32 years in prison for her role in 2016 fatal shooting

A Jackson County judged sentenced a woman to 32 years in prison Friday for her role in a 2016 shooting that killed a man and left a woman wounded.

Destynie J. Wright, a 20-year-old from Jackson County, was previously found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault, tampering with evidence and two counts of armed criminal action after participating in a 2016 New Year’s Day shooting in south Kansas City that claimed the life of Sederick J. Jones.

For the various convictions, a judge sentenced Wright to four consecutive seven-year sentences and an additional four-year sentence for a total of 32 years in prison, according Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker’s office. Ramon D. Boyd, a co-defendant in the case, has yet to stand trial.

The shooting, which was the county’s first fatal shooting of 2016, had occurred after a New Year’s Eve party. Police found the victims’ blood in Wright’s car and recovered her text messages with Boyd before charging the pair last year.

“OK, he’s in my car,” Wright wrote in one of the messages to Boyd. “come get him now!!!!!!”
