‘Zooming’ along I-35 at 100 mph, U-Haul van chased; rolls on exit in Olathe

A U-Haul van led law enforcement on a chase hitting 100 mph on northbound Interstate 35 Wednesday morning before it rolled and crashed on an exit ramp in Olathe.

A gas station in Franklin County reported that the driver of a U-Haul van had sped away without paying for fuel shortly after 11 a.m., according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Law enforcement officers saw a van heading north on Interstate 35, and the driver attempted to elude them.

Law enforcement were able to deploy spike sticks at 167th Street, causing tire damage, and the van began losing speed.

The van tried to exit at Santa Fe Street, but lost control on the ramp and rolled over into a median.

The chase was a startling sight for other motorists like Julie Dokos. She was traveling north on I-35 when she saw a line of fast-moving police cars cross over from the southbound to the northbound lanes about the same time the U-Haul van passed her with police on its tail.

“All the police cars are just zooming past me … and I thought, ‘Oh my goodness,’ that’s not good, especially on I-35.”

Soon she came upon the scene at Santa Fe. “Then I saw he (the driver of the van) was there and he’s turned over.”

No one was injured. The driver and a passenger who was with him were taken into custody.
