A 57-year-old man has been charged with being the bicycle-riding robber who held up an Overland Park bank last month.

Federal prosecutors on Tuesday charged Richard Armenta with the Nov. 24 robbery of the Capitol Federal branch at 9001 Santa Fe Drive.

The robber was armed with a silver handgun and wore a mask over his mouth and nose and got away with $1,100. He was seen riding a blue and white mountain bike outside the bank.

Photos of the suspect and bike were given to Overland Park patrol officers.

On Dec. 2, some of those officers were called to a disturbance at a business in the 7500 block of Metcalf Avenue.

Armenta was one of the people involved in the disturbance.

One of the officers, Jason Goddard, noticed a blue and white bicycle in the back of the pickup truck that Armenta was driving, according to the FBI affidavit filed in support of the bank robbery charges.

Goddard also noted that he was wearing shoes that appeared to be similar to shoes worn by the robber and also had a similar tattoo on his left hand, according to the affidavit.

A photo of the tattoo on Armenta’s hand taken at the Johnson County jail in 2016 and appeared to match the tattoo seen on surveillance photos from the robbery, the court documents allege.

Armenta is now in custody and faces a prison sentence of up to 25 years if convicted of bank robbery.
