KC man gets 18 years in prison for $177 robbery in Raytown

A Kansas City man was sentenced Friday to 18 years in prison for an armed robbery that netted him $177 and a trip to the hospital after he was shot by a police officer.

Christopher L. Rice, 26, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, where he pleaded guilty last December to the robbery of a Burger King restaurant in Raytown.

Before the robbery, Rice carjacked a vehicle he used in the hold-up, according to federal prosecutors.

After the robbery, a Raytown police detective spotted the vehicle and followed it until Rice parked and got out. When the detective ordered Rice to stop and get on the ground, he instead began to pulled a handgun from his waistband and was shot.

Prosecutors said Rice was sentenced as a career offender because of three prior state court convictions for robbery and a federal bank robbery conviction.
