Blayne Trevor Theunissen, 25, was issued a summons Wednesday in Platte County to appear in court Dec. 12 to face one count of animal neglect or abandonment, a misdemeanor.

According to Fox 4, police suspect Theunissen left the dog behind when he was evicted from his Northland apartment in September. The station reported Theunissen is a firefighter with the Kansas City Fire Department.

Attempts to reach Theunissen and Kansas City fire officials for comment were unsuccessful Friday.

The dog was a female chocolate Labrador retriever mix who was severely emaciated at the time of death, the station reported.
