James Mygatt was staying at a Blue Springs motel Tuesday when another guest asked him to turn down his stereo.

Instead of honoring the request, federal prosecutors allege, Mygatt got a gun and pointed it at the man who complained.

The alleged victim contacted police, and Mygatt, 25, who is a convicted felon and cannot legally possess a firearm, is now charged in U.S. District Court in Kansas City with a felony crime that carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

The incident occurred just after 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Welcome Inn in the 3300 block of N.W. Jefferson Street.

After Mygatt was arrested, police searched his motel room and found two handguns, more than 100 rounds of ammunition and a bottle containing 150 methadone pills, according to court documents.
