Blue Springs teen dies in wreck following police chase

A 17-year-old Blue Springs man was killed in a wreck Sunday afternoon following a police chase.

The fatal accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. in the vicinity of Northwest Hidden Ridge Circle and Valley View Road.

The incident began when Blue Springs officers responded to an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Candletree Drive on a report of a suspicious incident and possible theft from an apartment at about 1:50 p.m., according to Sgt. Joe Fanara.

The officers responding to the scene determined that the suspect was driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen, Fanara said.

The officers in marked patrol cars attempted to stop the driver and were involved in a two-mile pursuit. The driver was heading westbound on Valley View Road at a high rate of speed when the suspect’s vehicle lost control, crossed the center line and struck another vehicle exiting Hidden Ridge Circle onto eastbound Valley View Road, Fanara said.

The suspect died at the scene. Fanara said the two people in the other vehicle were taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.
