Charges filed in attempted assault of Independence police officer
An Independence man was charged Monday with intentionally trying to hit a police officer with the car he was driving.
Edwin L. Richardson was charged in connection with an incident early Sunday morning in the area of Ninth Street and Crisp Avenue.
Police had attempted to stop a vehicle, but it continued driving for several blocks before it ran off the road and hit a fence. Police said the driver backed up, struck a police car, then drove directly at an officer who was on foot.
The officer shot at the vehicle, and it veered away. Police found it abandoned a few blocks away and arrested three people. No injuries were reported.
Richardson, 29, was charged with attempted assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.
