Guilty plea for man accused of attacking woman in Shawnee Walmart parking lot
An Overland Park man arrested after the 2016 attack of a woman in the parking lot of a Shawnee Walmart pleaded guilty to attempted murder and other charges Thursday in Johnson County District Court.
Arthur Fred Wyatt III, 28, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder, attempted aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, attempted aggravated battery and aggravated assault.
Wyatt was originally charged with attempted first-degree murder in the attack, which took place Sept. 11, 2016, in the parking lot of the Walmart at 16100 West 65th Street in Shawnee.
A good Samaritan was shot, and a second suspect was killed in the incident.
A 39-year-old Kansas City, Kan., woman was attacked after two men approached her vehicle while she was putting her child in a safety seat. The woman was repeatedly struck in the head with a gun, prosecutors said.
A good Samaritan tried to intervene, and one of the attackers shot him. A second good Samaritan then shot one of the attackers, killing him.
The attacker who was killed was identified as 28-year-old John W. Simmons III of Kansas City.
Wyatt was later arrested and charged.
Prosecutors plan to recommend to a judge consecutive prison sentences for Wyatt, who is scheduled for sentencing at 3 p.m. Nov. 2 in Division 13 of Johnson County District Court.
