Fatal hit-and-run victim identified; Independence police arrest suspect

Independence police have arrested a 21-year-old man suspected to be the driver in a fatal hit-and-run crash Friday night at U.S. 24 and Blue Mills Road.

Police said the suspect will be arraigned Monday morning at the Jackson County Courthouse in Independence.

Police also on Sunday identified the victim as Aaron C. Overman, 34, of Buckner.

The accident occurred about 9:15 p.m. when the driver of a 2008 Dodge 2500 pickup rear-ended a 2014 Mazda 6 that was stopped at a red light. Police said the pickup driver fled the scene. Overman was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police said the crash remains under investigation.
