An alleged Kansas City gang member has been sentenced to federal prison for having a gun that was used in the shooting of a 14-year-old girl.

Tyron Young, 28, was sentenced to nine years and seven months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a 9mm handgun last May.

Laboratory testing of the weapon matched it to shell casings left at the scene of a shooting about a week earlier near 45th Street and Myrtle Avenue, according to court documents.

In that case, shots were fired into a house and struck a 14-year-old girl, who suffered a serious leg injury.

Young is currently facing prosecution in Jackson County for that shooting. Any sentence he receives in that case will run consecutively to his federal prison sentence.

Federal prosecutors alleged that Young was a gang member who was attempting to shoot the victim’s brother in retaliation for another shooting.
