Rifle used in Clinton police shooting has been found, Missouri Highway Patrol believes

Authorities believe they have recovered the rifle used to shoot and kill Clinton Police Officer Gary Michael.

The Missouri Highway Patrol tweeted Thursday that the rifle was found north of Clinton, Mo., in Henry County.

Ian James McCarthy is in the Henry County jail on a charge of first-degree murder in Sunday’s shooting of the 37-year-old officer.

Michael pulled McCarthy over about 10:45 p.m. McCarthy, who had warrants for his arrest on weapons charges, allegedly shot the officer and fled the scene. He was captured Tuesday evening after a two-day manhunt.

McCarthy, 39, is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday.

Visitation for Michael is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vansant-Mills Funeral Home, 314 West Jefferson St. in Clinton. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Benson Convention Center, 1008 E. Sedalia Ave. in Clinton. A public viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 9 to 11 a.m. Burial will follow funeral services at Englewood Cemetery in Clinton.
