Kansas City police said Dantae R. Franklin, 24, was fatally shot Sunday afternoon after reportedly pointing a handgun at officers.

Dantae R. Franklin was identified as the 24-year-old man who was fatally shot by Kansas City police officers Sunday afternoon near 34th Street and Prospect Avenue.

The shooting happened around 12:30 p.m. when officers confronted Franklin, who was armed with a handgun. Franklin had reportedly argued with a female before police arrived.

Officers were initially called to a gas station at 35th and Prospect Avenue where a witness alerted them about the argument between Franklin and the female.

When police arrived, the female told them that Franklin had assaulted her. Franklin reportedly ran north on Prospect and turned east on 34th Street. Two police officers followed him, one on foot and another in a patrol car.

As the officers neared, Franklin dropped a handgun on the ground. When Franklin picked it up and pointed it at the officers, both officers shot at the man, fatally injuring him, police said.

The officers rendered first aid to Franklin until he was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Relatives said Franklin had lived in Leavenworth.
