An Independence man who amassed a collection of more than 27,000 images of child pornography was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in federal prison.
Darren S. O’Dell, 47, was sentenced in federal court in Kansas City, where he pleaded guilty in January to possession and receipt of child pornography.
O’Dell was charged after investigators with the Missouri Highway Patrol traced online child porn images back to his computer.
A subsequent search of his computers uncovered more than 27,000 still images and 350 videos, according to the terms of his plea agreement.
Many of the images depicted small children being violently sexually assaulted by adults, according to the agreement.
“O’Dell is not a ‘run of the mill’ downloader and sharer of child pornography,” Assistant U.S. Attorney David Barnes wrote in a sentencing memorandum. “He has amassed a huge collection because he enjoys viewing still and moving images of very young children being restrained and viciously molested.”
As part of the plea agreement, O’Dell will also pay $18,000 to children depicted in the pornographic images who have been identified by authorities.
