Man killed by U.S. marshal in KC was subject of arrest warrant

The man shot to death Friday by a deputy U.S. marshal in Kansas City was the person being sought on a Johnson County arrest warrant, officials said Monday.

Kansas City police said that Fred E. Liggett Jr., 59, was armed when a U.S. Marshals Service task force member shot him while inside a home in the 8700 block of East 97th Terrace.

Deputies had gone to the home seeking a person wanted on a Johnson County warrant for aggravated indecent liberties with a child, police said.

Overland Park police said Monday that Liggett was the subject of an investigation in their city that led to the charges being filed in Johnson County District Court.

That incident reportedly occurred Friday at a residence in Overland Park, according to police.

Kansas City police are handling the shooting investigation but have not released details of the incident. Authorities have also not said where Liggett lived or how he was connected to the house where the shooting occurred.
