A mushroom hunter found human bones in a wooded area south of Belton in Cass County on Monday afternoon.
According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the hunter called deputies to an area near East 223rd and State Route Y around 3:40 p.m.
It was not clear how long the bones has been in the area, Cass County Sheriff Jeff Weber said. The age, race or sex of the victim was also unknown.
“Because of the vast area and the heavy cover, we’ll be here for some time,” Weber said Monday evening.

He said deputies would bring cadaver dogs to conduct an “extensive search” of the area Tuesday morning. The area is near a rock quarry, which may make the search for more human remains more difficult, Weber said.
“We would not continue to search if we thought we had them all,” Weber said. “At this time, we have a few (bones) but we don’t have a full skeleton, though.”
